Shannon Hollinger, Writer & Adventurer

Picture
Originally from Florida, Shannon Hollinger currently lives in a mountain valley in New Hampshire with her husband, where they are owned by two terriers. She spent as much time in college as she could, majoring in everything from zoology to archaeology. Almost a decade later, she finally emerged into the real world with degrees in Crime Scene Technology & Physical Anthropology. She finds writing to be a much cleaner way to spend her time than the autopsy suite. Most days it smells better, too.

Her short fiction has been published in a number of magazines and anthologies, most notable of which is a piece in Suspense Magazine for which she received a nomination to the Bram Stoker Award ballot. Shannon was also a top 10 finalist for the 2016 Al Blanchard Award. She has finished several novels, but spends too much time reading, writing, wrangling dogs and chasing moose, and not enough time querying agents.

I'm Shannon Hollinger and when I grow up, I want to be a writer.

Want to know more? Really? Here's 5 things:

1)     I love to read, but I especially love to read books that I love reading. Is that confusing? Let me explain. I'll read anything. Short stories, articles, warning labels, shampoo bottles, it really doesn't matter what it is as long as my eyes are reading during all available times. This means that I'm the last person you want to ask for a suggestion about what new TV series you should watch. It also means that I can tell you which shampoo you can use if you want to just 'lather and rinse' and which you need to 'repeat'.

2)     I am a graduate of the University of Florida (Go Gators!). I have degrees in Crime Scene Technology and Physical Anthropology, but I don't work in forensics anymore. Now all those degrees do is make for an interesting byline in magazines and lend a bit of technical knowledge to my writing. Do I regret it? Not at all. I'll always be able to put a quick end to an awkward conversation by talking about what I used to do. Writing is also slightly less stressful than handling dead people.

 3)    I started writing when I could hold a pen. My first story was about a pony. My second story was about Midget 314 - don't ask. My mom used to worry, but she seems to have come to terms with it. Writing is my bliss - it's what makes me happy. It's also what torments my soul with feelings of self loathing and doubt. It evens out (most of the time).

4)     My husband and I are trying to hike all 48 of the 4000 foot + mountains in New Hampshire. We're over halfway through!

 5)    When I'm not writing, I'm reading, climbing mountains, cooking, taking photographs or looking for adventure. Sometimes I multi-task and read while I cook or takes pictures while climbing mountains. I blog about my adventures and travels @ www.adventuresinthirtysomething.com.
